Hi, I'm Damian

KhazLabz is me, a one-person engineering lab founded in 2026 in Poland. My day job for the last six years has been test engineering at ZF Group, and I've always been the "deeply universal" one there: the engineer who starts the day testing, ends it wiring LiteLLM into a pipeline, and in between gets pulled into a discussion about building the OS image for custom hardware. A one-person orchestra, some would say. KhazLabz is that role, offered directly, without a company in between.

I build bottom-to-top: hardware, the firmware that runs on it, the backend it talks to, the web frontend people actually see, and the infrastructure that keeps all of it alive. Lately that also includes the plumbing around language models, when it genuinely earns its place.

Two things run through all of it. I'm an open source advocate: I publish what I build, I contribute back, and I pick open tooling over closed by default. And I'm European about it: code on GitLab, conversations on Mastodon, servers in the EU, your data under your laws.

How I work

I default to open source, boring technology and infrastructure you control. I write things down: architecture notes, runbooks, honest post-mortems. I would rather tell you a model or a microservice is not needed than sell you one.

What I stand for

Open source first

My projects ship under GPL or AGPLv3 for software and CERN-OHL-S for hardware, with a commercial licence available for clients who need one; smaller libraries and tools go out as Apache 2.0. I push for open source in client work whenever it's possible.

European digital sovereignty

Mastodon over X, Scaleway over us-east-1, self-hosted over locked-in. Your data should live where your laws do.

Knowledge sharing

Workshops, write-ups and documentation are part of the job, not an afterthought. If I learned it, I'll explain it.

Boundaries are where bugs live

Between the driver and the protocol, between the API and the database, between the model and the data. Owning the whole path is how I find them.
